Opera Review
Ah, La Grande Madama Diana Damrau. Fresh from her role debut as Maria Stuarda in Zürich, she brought this iconic queen to Berlin accompanied by some equally wonderful singing actors. I know I should have mentioned this in the review, but I’ll say it anyway. I am anticipating the day she adds Anna Bolena and especially the Roberto Devereux Elisabetta I, as she will definitely knock these roles right out of the park. Three years ago, I caught this production of this rare Puccini opera by the famous tenor, Rolando Villazon, which had such amazing performers like Aurelia Florian as Magda de Civry, Joseph Calleja as Ruggero Lastouc, Alexandra Hutton as Lisette, and Alvaro Zambrano as Prunier. What better way to send off the 2017-2018 Metropolitan Opera House season than with the radio broadcast of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette starring the dashingly mellifluous Charles Castronovo and the gorgeously alluring Ailyn Pérez. Enjoy the review and let me know your opinions as well.
Martina Serafin knocked it out of the park as Puccini’s Manon Lescaut. Enjoy the review and let me know your opinions as well.
Two years ago I caught an underrated Richard Strauss that deserved a good look. Enjoy the review and let me know your opinions as well.
Let’s see how this production of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut starring Kristine Opolais will fare. Enjoy the review and let me know your opinions as well. Yes, I did sound a bit worn out in this video review, but let’s just say my voice kind of gave way to a film shoot I was involved in. But it was getting better, I just needed to rest my voice.
Claus Guth. Whether you like him or hate him, you can’t deny that this Salome production did have some moments of brilliance. Enjoy the review and let me know your opinions as well.
Two years ago, I parted from Budapest with this light and lovely comic opera starring wealthy older man and his cheeky yet lovable servant girl. The singers involved in this opera were Andras Kiss as Uberto and Orsolya Safar as Serpina.
Two years ago in January, I caught the premiere of Leos Janacek’s Vec Makropulos, known in English as The Makropulos Case, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin starring the indescribable, invigorating, and exhilarating Wagnerian soprano, Madame Evelyn Herlitzius, as the tragically eternal anti-heroine, Emilia Marty.
