The Fabulous Four of Feudal Era Japan

This screenshot motivational poster is dedicated to all of my Shuran, Hakkaku, Ginta, and Shunran-loving friends, fellow artists, fans, and brethren. So, sit back, relax, and soak in Shuran’s and Hakkaku’s tight brand of friendship, Ginta’s and Shunran’s lovely and sweet brand of lovability, and how wonderfully diverse these four’s friendship is.

What happens when you combine two panther Deva siblings and two wolf bros? You would get a nice quartet of friends who are not only loyal to each other but also play a huge role in Sesshoumaru’s, Inuyasha’s, and Ayame’s lives as their greatest allies and friends for life. This is also helped by the fact that their personalities mesh really well with Shuran’s brute strength being a nice armor for his inner cuddly self that he displays to his good friends, Hakkaku’s and Ginta’s lovable hilarity with Hakkaku being the older brother to Ginta’s younger brother, and Shunran’s feistiness, euphoria, and enthusiasm.

Interspersed with this dynamic of two groups of siblings are the strong friendship occurring between Shuran and Hakkaku and the sweet romance ever-blossoming between Ginta and Shunran.

On the surface, Shuran and Hakkaku are the Feudal Era’s equivalent to Laurel and Hardy, Penn and Teller, Abbott and Costello, and Bud Spencer and Terence Hill, with Shuran being the large, hulking, super strong, super tough big guy to Hakkaku’s athletic, bouncy, fun-loving, lovably bumbling, svelte small gentleman. It could not be farther from the truth, as Shuran and Hakkaku would display these types of dynamics evidenced in the aforementioned duos. Given how completely opposite Shuran’s and Hakkaku’s personalities are, they can even understand each other in deep levels. Shuran can be able to help Hakkaku stand up for himself more often and use his natural strength to overcome any obstacle that may come his way. While Hakkaku can find someone surprisingly supportive, earnest, and akin to an older brother in Shuran, thus making him see that Shuran is not a huge bully at all and is someone who is a great, supportive friend.

In terms of Ginta and Shunran, they radiate with positivity, enthusiasm, gentility, purity, and unconditional love. There is something about these two lovebirds that scream lovely and sweet every way until Sunday without being too saccharine nor too overbearing nor too boring. This is attributed to their personalities, as Ginta is fun-loving, charming, and jovial and Shunran is feisty, giggly, and euphoric. As if the positives of their personalities do not suffice, it is also the support and understanding they would give to each other, as Shunran can help calm Ginta down with her flower spells if he has a stressful day and Ginta can help Shunran not to be too flighty by being his lovable, goofy self. Ginta and Shunran would be the couple who started off as childhood sweethearts and eventually grow up into something a whole lot more with a bunch of loving children and being really capable of growing old together.

As a bonus, there is also that goofy, fun-loving older brother and rambunctious younger sister dynamic to be found in Hakkaku and Shunran as well as that jock older brother and sensitive younger brother dynamic present between Shuran and Ginta, thus making this quartet of fabulous friends all the more versatile.

I bet you are also wondering, where do Sesshoumaru, Inuyasha, and Ayame fit into these four’s dynamics? As mentioned before, combining the strong, formidable, and steadfast dynamics of Sesshoumaru, Inuyasha, and Ayame with the tight, genuine, and loving dynamics of Shuran, Hakkaku, Ginta, and Shunran would mean that they can join forces as a veritable team brimming with loyalty and genuineness towards each other. This even got to the point where I thought that a nice AU headcanon for these seven Feudal Era warriors is that they began as childhood friends and had a bond that grew stronger with time.

Where Sesshoumaru is concerned, Shuran and Hakkaku would look up to him because of how formidable, focused, and determined he is. This would even get to the point where Sesshoumaru would function as a bit of an unwilling sensei to Shuran and Hakkaku in order for them to learn the concept about balance, precision, and complete mental clarity in every attack they make against their opponents. Therefore, Sesshoumaru would instill something in Shuran to not always rely on muscle to defeat his foes and harness something in Hakkaku to make sure that he does not run away from battle. In turn, Shuran and Hakkaku would not be afraid to help Sesshoumaru loosen up a bit. This is essentially the big brothers, Shuran and Hakkaku, looking up to the eldest big brother of the group, Sesshoumaru.

Inuyasha and Ginta would definitely have this rough, super strong, tough big brother and meek, loving, caring little brother dynamic. Both of them could be able to understand each other in a way that would make them see that their insecurities will have no room in their firm friendship/brotherhood. Ginta could learn a lot from Inuyasha and the usage of his brute strength and boundless courage. Inuyasha would also benefit from Ginta’s caring nature, as he can comprehend that he does not always have to take everything too seriously. Together, they can bring a lot more meaning into each others’ lives in the most positive way.

If one were to look at gal pal goals, one does not need to look further than Ayame and Shunran because these girls have a superb sisterly bond. Ayame is the cool, strong-minded, determined, compassionate older sister to Shunran’s excitable, gregarious, jovial, enthusiastic younger sister who can be able to be frank with each other and help each other in touching and well-meaning ways. Ayame’s strength is going to inspire Shunran to want to become as strong as her and look up to her as her heroine. Meanwhile, Shunran’s brand of joviality and fun would give Ayame the impetus to enjoy life a lot more. This red-headed duo would be able to demonstrate how strong they are not only as awesome heroines, but also as women who are independent and passionate.

In conclusion, combining Shuran’s brutish strength and inner cuddliness, Hakkaku’s excitable and high-strung personality, Ginta’s hilarious charm and gregarious lovability, and Shunran’s feistiness and cheekiness makes for a wonderful friendship to occur with these four awesome people.

I hope you all enjoyed this and I will see you in the next submission. Take care and stay safe, everybody.

Shuran, Hakkaku, Ginta, and Shunran from Inuyasha belong to Rumiko Takahashi and Sunrise.
