The Surrealism of Grinning Droopy Dog

This screenshot motivational poster is highly Pro-Droopy. So, sit back, relax, and revel in the surrealism of Droopy’s wide grin. Furthermore, this is my contribution for this year’s Red Ribbon Reviewers’ Month.

Ah, the good old days of Cartoon Network. When I first tuned into this channel as a six-year-old boy starting grade school visiting my paternal grandma’s house, I was completely immersed into the imaginative, wild, wacky, and awesome universe all my most favorite characters of the old Hanna-Barbera cartoons as well as the Cartoon Cartoons had to offer.

One commercial that struck my attention as a nascent fan of Cartoon Network, a channel I still hold in relatively high regard as an adult, was the Bloopers of the Cartoon Stars commercial where we see the main stars of Scooby-Doo, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Magilla Gorilla, and especially Droopy get themselves into behind-the-scenes shenanigans. Speaking as an actor, I can totally relate to those stars because of the precision they need to pull any scene off as well as the great amount of what the Germans call as Spielfreude or the joy of playing have.

Out of all the little vignettes in this little commercial, one moment stuck out to me to the point of being ingrained in my memory for a very long time and that was Droopy Dog emitting a huge grin. As a child, I did not think too much of it. However, as an adult who ended up thoroughly familiarizing myself with the Droopy cartoons from the classic ones to the shorts in the Tom and Jerry Kids Show, I found it super hilarious and really surreal in the most delightful way. I say this because it is not like everyday that you see Droopy let out such a wide grin like that. At least I know I can die as happy as Droopy is in that screenshot.

Overall, this is one moment which I continue to thoroughly look back with pleasant smiles if I ever want to have a moment to escape from all the crap the world has to throw at me, especially in this ongoing pandemic.

I hope you all enjoyed this, let me know your experiences with Droopy’s wide grin and if you also thought it was a surreal moment, and I will see you in the next submission. Take care and stay safe, everybody.

Droopy Dog belongs to William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.
